Hi, I’m Dr. Joann Giesenhaus. I want to demonstrate a few simple exercises you can do at home to help determine if you may have possible subluxations in the spinal column.
Exercise 1: Seated Sciatica Check
This first one is for the lower back and sciatic nerve. You’ll want to perform this on both sides.
- Sit upright and extend one leg straight out in front of you.
- Point your toe toward yourself.
- Tuck your chin toward your chest.
If you feel pain radiating behind the knee, into the hip, or in the low back itself, that might be a possible sign of sciatica — or a vertebral subluxation that’s compressing the nerve. If you notice any discomfort, it’s a strong suggestion to have your spine checked.
Exercise 2: Hip Flexibility & Alignment Check
The next test also targets the lower back and hips. Cross one ankle over the opposite knee, forming a figure-four shape. Sit up nice and tall. Lean forward gently into the stretch.
You should be able to lean in and bring your crossed leg parallel to the floor. If the leg stays elevated or if you feel tightness, stiffness, or pain, that may be an indication of:
- A vertebral subluxation in the lumbar spine
- Possible hip joint restriction
- Muscle tightness or imbalance
Be sure to try this on both sides and compare the difference.
If either of these movements causes discomfort or reveals imbalance, it’s a good idea to have your spine professionally checked.
